The Video Platform Provides Users Authority to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-created content appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features over 1 billion AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global rollout. This shift coincides with a rise in AI-generated material, driven by recent video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is deemed low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is frequently illogical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to provide users the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, over 100 m videos are added to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be capable of decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they watch by using the “manage topic” setting in the platform and choosing the AI content topic. Additional categories that currently be modified under the setting include news, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules oblige creators to tag “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an artificially created watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is designed to stop users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and groups to develop informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will support non-profit groups dedicated to educating computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over plans to make redundant a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety division in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A company official stated that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by people. TikTok reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
